"Yet the Canadian Rockies awaited a thorough geological field survey until the mid-1960s. Clearly, it was time to map the portion between the Bow River and the Athabasca River the part that is most accessible and impressive comprehensively and in detail. GSC geologist Ray Price, who had done his doctoral research in the Flathead area southwest of Crowsnest Pass in 1958, proposed just such a survey. He had the backing of his supervisor and mentor, long-time Rockies authority R.J.W. Douglas. In 1964 the GSC’s director, Yves Fortier, approved Operation Bow-Athabasca to do the job Ray Price was chosen to lead the effort. Eric Mountjoy, a former GSC geologist who was in his second year of teaching at McGill University, was another obvious choice to join the venture. Eric was Ray’s equal at geological mapping in the Rockies, and the two worked well together. Both men were in their early thirties. They were given a team of eight other geologists, also young and enthusiastic, including three who would earn their doctorates on different aspects of the project. Planning included cooperation between Operation Bow-Athabasca and other current GSC studies in the western Rockies and adjacent Columbia Mountains. Fieldwork was approved for the summers of 1965 and 1966. The budget for 1965, which was typical for both years, was under $50,000, not counting salaries. $30,000 of this was for helicopter time, paid to Bullock Rotors and Wings of Calgary for exclusive use of a three-person Bell 47G machine (similar to the helicopters seen in the TV series MASH), with pilot and maintenance engineer. Operation Bow-Athabasca was in full swing by the middle of June each year, when the high country was mostly snow-free. Work ended late in August, when the snow began to fly again and the student field assistants returned to their universities. The project had four trailers for its base camp. These Atco-type units were installed sequentially at four different locations."
