2 Alexander, Rob The History of Canmore
Banff, AB, Canada Summerthought 2010 0981149154 / 9780981149158 Soft Cover New
Canmore, with its desirable surroundings, fantastic recreational opportunities, and convenient location between Calgary and Banff, is a modern boomtown. But it also has a long and accessible past, which is explored in this new title, the only book in print on Canmore’s colourful history. Founded by the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1883, Canmore has a history of reinventing itself. The town began as a railway divisional point, but when the Canadian Pacific Railway closed its facilities in 1898, the fledgling settlement would have slid into oblivion had it not been for coal mining. Eventually, mining, too would come to an end, leaving the town to reinvent itself as a mountain resort town. Interesting writing by a longtime local, a reader-friendly layout, and the liberal use of historic and contemporary images make the The History of Canmore an appealing read for everyone. The book includes sidebars, a timeline, recommended reading, and a thorough index. Rob Alexander grew up in Canmore, steeped in the history of the Canadian West and the sights and sounds of a coal mining town. With an affinity for ruins and abandoned sites, he gravitated towards story and sense-of-place, leading him to study writing and photography. He is a reporter for the Rocky Mountain Outlook newspaper, a freelance writer and co-author of Exshaw: Heart of the Valley and The Exshaw Cement Plant: Foundations for the Future.

4 Anderson, Ian Sitting Bull's Boss: Above the Medicine Line with James Morrow Walsh
Surrey, BC, Canada Heritage House Publishing Company, Limited 2000 1895811635 / 9781895811636 Trade paperback New
The story of Major James Walsh, 'the original Mountie,' and of Sitting Bull who fled to Canada after Little Big Horn. No Native American in U.S. history has provoked more emotion and interest than Sitting Bull. His often misunderstood role in the Battle of the Little Bighorn and his subsequent self-imposed exile have rarely been explored. The events that followed the demise of General George Custer and his 7th Cavalry when they fought Sitting Bull's warriors brought together some of the most fascinating characters of the post-Civil War frontier era. In the aftermath of battle, Sitting Bull's Sioux eluded U.S. Army commander Nelson Miles while gradually moving north to the border or 'Medicine Line' as the Sioux nation knew it. There Sitting Bull and 5,000 followers met a man wearing a red coat. He was James Morrow Walsh of the North West Mounted Police and he represented the 'Great White Mother of the North.' Walsh was the only white man Sitting Bull would ever trust. This is a story of two men and how their unlikely bond built on truth and respect would be buried by the hubris of politicians.

6 Beck, Janice Sanford No Ordinary Woman: The Story of Mary Schaffer Warren
Surrey, BC, Canada Rocky Mountain Books 2006 0921102828 / 9780921102823 Revised edition Trade Paperback New
Artist, photographer, writer, world traveller and, above all, explorer, Mary Schäffer Warren overcame the limited expectations of women at the turn of the nineteenth century in order to follow her dreams. Mary Sharples, born into a wealthy Quaker family in Pennsylvania, was a precocious child who excelled at school yet did not know how to make a bed at the tender age of 18. She was much more interested in the arts and in travelling. A trip across Canada in 1889 proved the turning point in Mary’s life. Not only did she meet her future husband, doctor and botanist Charles Schäffer, she also fell hopelessly in love with the Canadian mountains. After Charles’ death, Mary embarked on a series of explorations into the Canadian Rockies at a time when it was not thought proper for a woman to do so. Her most famous trips of 1907 and 1908 resulted in the rediscovery of Maligne Lake and the highly regarded book Old Indian Trails of the Canadian Rockies. Mary eventually settled in Banff and there married her handsome young guide Billy Warren. Since her death in 1937, she continues to inspire young people and women in particular. One of her greatest admirers is the author who examines the difficulties Mary faced in entering what was then a man’s domain. Janice Sanford Beck, recipient of Mount Allison University’s prestigious Tweedie Gold Medal for academic achievement, has resided in five of Canada’s ten provinces but always returns to her spiritual home amid the mountains of her native Alberta. An outdoor enthusiast since childhood, her hiking credits include the West Coast Trail, the Chilkoot Trail, Jasper’s North Boundary Trail and the Glacier Trail, which approximates Mary Schäffer’s route from Brazeau Lake to Maligne Lake.

15 Coleman, A. P. (foreword By Chic Scott) The Canadian Rockies : New Trails and Old
Surrey, BC, Canada Rocky Mountain Books 2006 1894765761 / 9781894765763 Reprint Soft Cover New
Arthur Philemon Coleman was a passionate Canadian and one of the first to truly discover the beauty and majesty of this country's mountain ranges as an explorer, geologist and mountaineer. In 1884, before the railway traversed the Rocky and Columbia mountains, Coleman headed west on the first of what would be eight mountaineering expeditions, making his way on foot and pack horse, with Native guides and without, over passes in Alberta and British Columbia. First published in 1911, this new edition gives modern-day readers a glimpse of the early days of mountaineering in the Canadian west. It paints a sympathetic picture of the rugged men and women who opened the region and of the hardships they endured. In his travels he encountered some of the main characters in Canadian mountaineering history, including Mary Schaffer, Joby Beaver, Frank Sibbald, Reverend George Kinney and Adolphus Moberly.

19 Gadd, Ben Operation Bow-Athabasca: The Geological Survey of Canada Takes on the Rockies - Historical Summary and Exhibit Catalogue
Canmore, AB, Canada Canmore Museum & Geoscience Centre 2012 0981027520 / 9780981027524 First Edition Soft Cover New
Text is in English and French with photographs throughout and a CD with photos, audio interviews, maps and video about Operation Bow-Athasbasca. "Yet the Canadian Rockies awaited a thorough geological field survey until the mid-1960s. Clearly, it was time to map the portion between the Bow River and the Athabasca River the part that is most accessible and impressive comprehensively and in detail. GSC geologist Ray Price, who had done his doctoral research in the Flathead area southwest of Crowsnest Pass in 1958, proposed just such a survey. He had the backing of his supervisor and mentor, long-time Rockies authority R.J.W. Douglas. In 1964 the GSC’s director, Yves Fortier, approved Operation Bow-Athabasca to do the job Ray Price was chosen to lead the effort. Eric Mountjoy, a former GSC geologist who was in his second year of teaching at McGill University, was another obvious choice to join the venture. Eric was Ray’s equal at geological mapping in the Rockies, and the two worked well together. Both men were in their early thirties. They were given a team of eight other geologists, also young and enthusiastic, including three who would earn their doctorates on different aspects of the project. Planning included cooperation between Operation Bow-Athabasca and other current GSC studies in the western Rockies and adjacent Columbia Mountains. Fieldwork was approved for the summers of 1965 and 1966. The budget for 1965, which was typical for both years, was under $50,000, not counting salaries. $30,000 of this was for helicopter time, paid to Bullock Rotors and Wings of Calgary for exclusive use of a three-person Bell 47G machine (similar to the helicopters seen in the TV series MASH), with pilot and maintenance engineer. Operation Bow-Athabasca was in full swing by the middle of June each year, when the high country was mostly snow-free. Work ended late in August, when the snow began to fly again and the student field assistants returned to their universities. The project had four trailers for its base camp. These Atco-type units were installed sequentially at four different locations."
