Taylor, C. J. Jasper : A History of the Place and Its People Markham, ON, Canada Fifth House 2009 189725234X Trade Paperback New A lively and original history of Jasper National Park by a leading Parks Canada historian. Lavishly illustrated with historical and contemporary photographs and maps, Jasper: A History of the Place and Its People begins in the 1800s when the area was the domain of hunters and trappers and moves on to describe the transformation wrought by the building of two railways through the area at the beginning of the twentieth century to the jewel in the Canadian wilderness crown that is Jasper Park today. It was the railway construction that inspired the creation of the park in 1907. For the next forty years Jasper was the sleeping giant of Canada's national parks. Large and attractive, it was also among the least visited of the national parks. These attributes enabled it to retain its rustic wilderness mystique well into the 1950s. It was renowned for its backcountry trails, its legendary horse outfitters (whose stories are told here), and its picturesque big game. But as the biggest of the national parks south of 60, it shared many of the typical problems of those parks in the twentieth century. Issues of game and forest management, road building and tourism-central topics in Jasper's history-were also main topics in the history of the broader national parks program. The completion of the Icefields Parkway and the Yellowhead Highway brought automobile tourists to the park in greater numbers through the 1950s and 1960s. Today, as one of Canada's most famous attractions, tourists and locals continue to explore its many natural splendours. Taylor's Jasper will also allow them to explore the park's human history as well. Price:

Turner, Robert D.; Wilkie, J. S. David Steam Along the Boundary : Canadian Pacific, Great Northern and the Great Boundary Copper Boom Winlaw, BC, Canada Sono Nis Press 2007 978550391589 First Edition Hard Cover New New Steam Along the Boundary brings to life one of the most fascinating eras of British Columbia's railway and mining history: the great copper boom that seized the Boundary District in the late 1890s and early 1900s. The rival Great Northern and Canadian Pacific railways, along with the fledgling Kettle River Valley Railway, were the major players in a fierce competition for the rich ores and copper wealth from the region. The southern mountains of British Columbia became one of the richest copper-silver-gold mining districts in Canada and were home to one of the world's largest copper smelters by the early 1900s. Three major smelters served the mountain of copper ore on which the city of Phoenix was built, almost overnight. Connecting them all to the coal mines that supported them and the markets that demanded their copper was a network of steam railways. Cities and towns across the southern interior and in northern Washington, including Grand Forks, Greenwood, Phoenix, Castlegar, Keremeos, Hedley, Republic and others, grew and prospered with the mines and smelters. This fascinating story gives insights into the history of both British Columbia and Washington State, from Vancouver to Spokane. After less than 25 years the boom was over, the mines depleted and the smelters gone, but the railways remained, carrying passengers, lumber, fruit, and settlers through the rugged and beautiful mountains. This richly illustrated book, the culmination of decades of research by the authors, is sure to become another perennial favourite. 224 pages with over 300 B&W and 27 colour photos, 3 colour maps. van Herk, Aritha Audacious And Adamant: The Story Of Maverick Alberta Toronto, ON, Canada Key Porter Books Limited 2007 1552368545 First Edition Soft Cover New Beautiful, prosperous, and unpredictable, Alberta has always been the maverick province. Indeed, Albertans pride themselves on their difference. This book tells the story of how this fascinating part of Canada has come to possess the character it does. Through the stories of a host of individuals who together shaped southern Alberta's unruly history. Audacious and Adamant traces the profile of a place both beautiful and contrary. This is the story of the immigrants and politicians who weathered dust storms and national policies to forge Alberta's unusual temperament. This is the story of the dancers and wrestlers and artists who depicted Alberta's beauty and demonstrated Alberta's prosperity. This is the story of the dreamers and ne'er-do-wells who refused to follow the rules. This is the story of winners and losers, mavericks whose determination helped to ferment the astonishing place that Alberta has become. Determined to control their destiny, the characters profiled within these pages rolled up their sleeves and went to work. Through boom and bust, through rain and dust, they persevered, leaving their indelible mark on this part of Canada. Against the backdrop of a stunning landscape, the sheer audacity of these province-builders demonstrates the stubbornness and foresight of those who poured their energy into making this place as unusual and awe-inspiring as its scenery. Alberta's inheritance is unorthodox. Her citizens defy definition. In a history unlike any place on earth, Audacious and Adamant recounts the tales of Albertans who made a difference, whether they were lovers or liars, saints or sinners. Their heads in the clouds and their feet in the mud, these characters together forged a fascinating history. Price:

Park Prisoners tells the astonishing and deeply troubling story of the construction of our country 's mountain and prairie parks.
